Bet Smarter, Not Harder

Most bettors lose because of math they never learned - not bad luck. Here's how odds, juice, and edges actually work, with live calculators so you can see it for yourself.

Reading the Odds

Odds are just probability wearing a price tag. American odds tell you what you risk or win on $100; decimal odds tell you your total return per $1. Convert either one into a percentage and you know the win rate the book is daring you to beat.

American odds

A minus number (-110) is the favorite - risk that much to win $100. A plus number (+150) is the underdog - win that much on a $100 bet.

Decimal odds

Your total payout per $1 staked, stake included. 1.91means $1 returns $1.91. Multiply legs together for parlays - it's the cleaner math.

Implied probability

Turn any price into a percentage and you get the break-even win rate. -110 implies 52.4% - the number you must beat just to stay even.

Decimal odds1.91
Profit on a $100 bet$91
Break-even win rate52.4%

You have to win 52.4% of these bets just to break even. Anything less and the juice slowly bleeds your bankroll.

The Juice - How the House Really Wins

The juice(a.k.a. vig or hold) is the book's commission baked into every price. When you see -110 on both sidesof a coin flip, you're risking $110 to win $100 on a 50/50 - that extra $10 is the tax. It's why a true 50% bet still loses money long-term, and why you must hit 52.4%, not 50%, just to break even.

Juice (Vig) Calculator

Enter both sides of a market. The implied odds add up to more than 100% - that extra slice is the book's hold.

Implied odds add up to104.8%
Book's hold (the juice)4.55%
Fair line, Side A (no vig)+100 (50.0%)
Fair line, Side B (no vig)+100 (50.0%)

Anything over 100% is pure house edge. On a standard -110 / -110 market the book holds ~4.5% - that's the tax you pay on every bet, win or lose. Shopping for a better number shrinks it.

How juice eats your winnings

Say you bet $110 to win $100 on coin flips and you go a perfect 50-50, 10 wins and 10 losses. You'd think you break even - but you don't.

10 wins × $100 = +$1,000. 10 losses × $110 = -$1,100. You're down $100 after winning exactly half. That's the juice - a slow, guaranteed leak that only a real edge overcomes.

Parlays multiply the juice

A parlay only pays if everyleg hits, and the book takes its cut on each one. Stack legs and the house edge snowballs - the payouts look huge precisely because your odds of cashing are tiny. Here's the real cost of those -110 legs:

LegsYour true chance to cashWhat you get (on $100)What's fairHouse edge
225%$264$3008.9%
312.5%$596$70013.0%
46.3%$1,228$1,50017.0%
53.1%$2,436$3,10020.8%
100.1%$64,208$102,30037.2%

Assumes each leg is a true 50/50 priced at -110. A fair (no-vig) book would pay the middle column; the book pays you less, and the gap is its edge.

Stack your legs and see the combined price, the payout, and your real odds of cashing.

Leg 1
Leg 2
Combined odds+264 (3.64x)
Profit if it hits$264.46
Total payout$364.46
Implied chance to cash27.4%

Each leg carries its own juice, and parlays multiply them together. The big payout is the bait - your 27.4% chance to cash is the hook. See how the house edge compounds in the table below.

What Is an “Edge”?

An edgemeans your real probability of winning is higher than the price implies. If the line says 52.4% but you genuinely believe it's 56%, that 3.6-point gap is your edge - and over hundreds of bets, it's what turns the juice from a wall into a speed bump.

Expected value (EV)

Your average profit per bet if you made it a thousand times. Positive EV (+EV) means the math is on your side; -EV means you're donating. Win rate × payout minus the juice - that's the whole equation.

Closing line value

Did you beat the number the game closed at? Consistently grabbing a better line than the close (CLV) is the single best sign you have a real, repeatable edge - not just a hot week.

Sample size

A small edge needs hundreds of bets to show up through the variance. Don't judge a strategy on 10 plays - judge the process, size correctly, and let the math compound.

Tips & Tricks That Actually Move the Needle

None of these are secrets - they're just the habits almost nobody has the discipline to keep. Do them anyway. This is the boring stuff that pays.

Shop for the best line

The same game is priced differently at every book. Half a point or 5 cents of juice doesn’t feel like much, but over a season it’s the difference between winning and losing. Always have 2–3 books open.

Protect your bankroll first

You can’t win if you go broke. Bet a small, consistent fraction of your roll per play and you’ll survive the cold streaks that bust everyone else. Sizing beats picking.

Treat parlays as lottery tickets

They’re fun and they sell dreams, but the house edge compounds with every leg. Keep them small and occasional - never your main strategy. Singles are where the long-term money lives.

Bet with your head, not your heart

No chasing losses, no “get it all back” bets, no betting your team because you love them. The book prices in public emotion - your edge is staying cold when everyone else is hot.

Track every single bet

Date, sport, market, line, stake, result. You can’t fix what you don’t measure. A simple log reveals which bets actually make you money and which ones just feel good.

Chase closing line value

If you consistently bet a better number than the line closes at, you’re beating the market - and CLV predicts long-run profit better than this week’s win/loss does. Grade your process, not just results.

Knowing the math is half of it.

The other half is sizing every bet rightso a cold streak can't bust you. That's bankroll management - and we built the calculators for it.
